Does your lawn need to be revitalized? You have two options; seeding or sodding. Grass seed comes in a wide variety of types and is a great option for thinning areas of your lawn, while sod will give you an instantly new lawn. If you want to revitalize your residential or commercial lawn located in Worcester County, Middlesex County or anywhere in Central Massachusetts there are some factors to consider:
SEEDING
Seeding is a great option if your lawn has thinning or bare spots due to high traffic areas, overexposure from the summer sun or pest problems. It is also a good option for adding new varieties to a mature lawn. Blending in more durable varieties can help the overall health of your entire lawn.
Timing is an important factor when seeding. For lawns in central Massachusetts, you will want to get this done before temperatures begin to drop in early fall.
Before you seed it is a good idea to aerate the areas where you will be spreading seed. You can then apply the seed with a handheld rotary spreader ( for small areas ) or full-size rotary spreader for larger areas.
Once the grass seed has been spread you may opt to use ground cover to keep everything warm and moist to help stimulate germination. Compost and straw are good options for this.
A consistent watering schedule will be needed during the early stages of germination. You will need to lightly water the area several times a day making sure not to oversaturate the ground. You will need to continue this routine even after you see the first sprouts Then when the sprouts reach three inches you can begin to mow.
SODDING
Installing sod requires less maintenance than seeding, but requires more upfront prep work.
For sod to grow, the underside of the sod needs to make contact with the soil to take root. You will need to prepare the soil by using a rototiller to turn over the soil or bring in additional dirt for areas that are uneven or have thin soil coverage. The goal is to have your existing lawn as sparse as possible before you lay down your sod.
While you are laying the sod it is a good idea to water as you go to assure that everything remains moist. After the sod is down you will need to continue watering periodically each day until the sod has taken root into your existing lawn. The goal is to make sure the sod does not wilt and continues to grow. Be careful to avoid flooding or overwatering.
